The United Nations General Assembly adopted the resolution on Wednesday 12 October with 143 votes in favour, 5 against and 35 abstentions.
The 193 member states meeting in emergency since Monday adopted this resolution initiated by the United States and Albania with 143 votes in favour, against five countries against and 35 who abstained, including China, India, Pakistan and South Africa. The five states that voted against were, not surprisingly, Russia, Belarus, Syria, North Korea and Nicaragua.
Gabon, which currently holds the presidency of the UN Security Council, voted in favour of the resolution entitled «Territorial integrity of Ukraine: upholding the principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations», which considers that the decisions taken by Russia on 21 February and 29 September 2022 concerning the status of the regions of Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporijjia «constitute a violation of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine».
On 30 September, Moscow used its veto to block the same resolution in the Security Council condemning the annexations in Ukraine. Apart from the Russian veto, the text had received 10 votes in favour out of the 15 members of the Council. China, India, Brazil and Gabon abstained.
