Coronation of King Charles III: « On this historical day, Gabon is proud to belong to the great Commonwealth family » (Ali Bongo Ondimba)

Charles III was officially crowned king on Saturday, May 6, at the age of 74, during a ceremony at Westminster Abbey, in the heart of London, which brought together some 2,000 hand-picked guests.

Among them, President Ali Bongo Ondimba of Gabon, a country that joined the Commonwealth in June 2022.

« I offer my warmest congratulations to King Charles III and Queen Camilla, » wrote the Gabonese head of state on social networks.

« On this historical day, » he added, « Gabon is particularly proud to belong to the great Commonwealth family. »

Tens of thousands of Britons gathered in the capital to attend the event, which was also watched on television by hundreds of millions.

The last such ceremony was 70 years ago. Gabon joined the Commonwealth in June 2022 at the Kigali Summit.
