The Regulatory Authority for Electronic Communications, Posts and Press Distribution (Arcep) officially joined the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation at its Board of Directors meeting on 29 September in Bucharest, Romania. The telecom regulator thus becomes the first Gabonese public institution to join the Commonwealth.
Even if it was only made official at the end of September, the membership of Arcep in the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation (CTO) has been on track since 24 August, when Bernadette Lewis, secretary general of the CTO, signed the certificate of membership of Gabon.
Arcep thus becomes the 55th member of this 74-year-old organisation whose headquarters are in London
«Our country, Gabon, has just written a new important page in the history of telecommunications, by borrowing the choice of the legendary pragmatism of the Anglo-Saxons,» said Lin Mombo, head of Arcep for the past 13 years, at the official ceremony.
Arcep thus becomes the first Gabonese public institution to join the Commonwealth. The number of memberships of this type should increase in the coming months.
Gabon became a member of the Commonwealth on 25 June 2022, during the Kigali Summit.
In a week’s time, on 18 October, President Ali Bongo Ondimba is expected in London for the ceremony of raising the Gabonese flag. This is a highly symbolic event that marks the country’s membership of this organisation, which now has 56 members.
